These thick layers of dead skin cells are usually white or yellow in color, and appear tough and thick. Other causes include swelling from varicose veins, menstrual periods, or simply standing or sitting for a long period of time. Corns and calluses are common skin problems that are characterized by a buildup of hard, thick skin, usually on your feet. To help them heal, you can buy special doughnut-shaped pads that let the corn fit right into the hole in the middle to relieve pain and pressure. There are also pads that contain salicylic (say: sal-uh-sil-ik) acid, which takes off the dead skin to help get rid of the corn. If the corn sticks around for a while and keeps hurting, you may need to see a podiatrist (say: puh-dye-uh-trist), which is the fancy name for a foot doctor. I was intrigued that, just like me, its not just the foot that gets favoured buts also lips and scalp. When we do it and feel the pain it makes our brain release certain pain killing and mood enhancing chemicals. It allows us to naturaly produce the chemicals we other wise, normaly, lack for needed pain control and anti-depressants. I have picked at my feet too to the point were it is hard to walk.. It's true..for some odd reason it does make me feel better. All of us obviously have pain or anguish that we hold inside and picking somehow tends to relieve it..well just a little at the moment we r doing it.. For me, it gets so embarrassing and shameful that I can't even go to the gynecologist for my annuals.
